Remove the door panel from the door frame and place it in a safe place where it will not get damaged.Repair Topics > Body and Paint > Remove a door panel Remove a door panel How to Remove a door panel Use your other hand to disconnect the door handle rod and then disconnect the speaker wire harness (if applicable). Pull the panel away from the door frame just enough to get your hands behind it and then support the panel with one hand. Lift the door panel straight up about 2 inches from the door frame to release the retaining hook from the sheet metal shelf of the door frame. Once the bottom fasteners are pried off, work your way up each side of the door panel until all the fasteners are disconnected. Use the trim at the bottom of the panel to gently pry off the hidden fasteners underneath the door panel. Remove any retaining screws that may be present under the control module. Disconnect the wire harness connections from the control module. Pry the window control module (if equipped with power windows) gently off the arm rest assembly. Pry the molding out from the door from the rear of the molding using the trim tool. Remove the retaining screw located in the door handle molding.
Remove the one to two (depending on the year) retaining screws underneath the cover. Pry the cover off with a small flat-bladed screwdriver. Locate the aesthetic cover in the molding of the door cup. Locate and remove the two visible retaining screws on the door panel with the Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the screw and then unsnap the molding from the door frame with the V-shaped angle trim tool. Later models of the Contour employ an exterior retaining screw. Wiggle the window regulator handle off its arbor. Push the pliable panel inward to access the clip and use a small curved hook to pull it off.

Remove the C-clip from window regulator handle (on manual window models only) located between the round base of the handle and the panel. Align the eight trim pins with the trim pin anchor holes in the inner door skin and push the pins into the door skin to seat the door panel. Replace the panel by lowering it onto the door, ensuring the upper lip of the panel slides into the window well. Move the panel away from the door to complete the removal process.
Unplug the wiring connector from the window and lock switch assembly. Lift the door panel up and off the door by hand. Pry each trim pin out separately with the trim tool.
Five trim pins that anchor into holes in the inner door skin hold the door panel to the door. Pry the door panel from the door using the trim tool. There is one screw on the trailing edge of the panel, one in the inner door pull cup and the two exposed in Step 1. Remove the four door-panel retaining screws with the socket wrench and 8-mm socket. Pry the trim plug from the center of the leading edge of the door panel with the trim tool to expose a second retaining screw. Pry the small trim plug out of the inner door handle bezel with the tip of the trim tool to expose a hex-head door panel retaining screw. Lower the window in the door in question.
